Importance of National Reporting
Article 13, Paragraph 3 of the Basel Convention requires Parties to report information related to their implementation of the Convention. Reports are submitted annually through the Basel Convention to the Conference of the Parties. This reporting allows bodies of the Basel Convention to monitor implementation and to identify issues that need to be addressed. The Implementation and Compliance Committee has been tasked by the COP to improve the implementation and compliance with the national reporting obligation. Reporting is due on December 31, annually. The report is meant to cover the previous year, for instance a report submitted in 2025 should cover January to December 2024.
Designate your National Focal Point
- Focal points are responsible for receiving and transmitting information as provided for in Articles 13 and 1.
National reports are submitted to the Secretariat through the Focal Point. - A Party may designate only one Focal Point.
Designate your Competent Authorities
- May be an entity/agency responsible for environmental protection/pollution control
- Has a key role in licensing entities engaged in transporting, collecting, generating and disposing of hazardous or other wastes
- Responsible for implementing the notification process for transboundary movement of hazardous or other wastes.
